Much of the focus during Pride Month is on youth and contemporary culture — but the LGBTQ+ community stands on the shoulders of elders who fought when it was far more dangerous to do so. These are the pioneers who marched when the world wasn’t watching, who loved and lived through discrimination, HIV/AIDS, and social invisibility.
Unfortunately, many LGBTQ+ elders face isolation, especially if they lack family support or access to affirming elder care. Their stories are often forgotten or untold — despite the fact that they laid the groundwork for the freedoms and acceptance we see today.
Honoring LGBTQ+ elders means more than remembering history. It means ensuring they are not left behind. Inclusive elder care, intergenerational programs, and community recognition are ways we can uplift and thank those who paved the way.
This Pride, let’s celebrate not just the future of queerness, but its roots. Because every rainbow has a foundation.
