Media has a profound influence on how people perceive the world and themselves. For many LGBTQ+ individuals, especially youth, seeing characters who reflect their identities can be affirming and even life-saving. Unfortunately, queer representation in film, television, and literature has historically been limited, stereotyped, or erased altogether.
In recent years, there’s been a welcome surge in LGBTQ+ representation — from complex queer leads to authentic coming-out stories. Shows like Pose, Heartstopper, and Schitt’s Creek have helped shift narratives and bring visibility to different identities within the LGBTQ+ spectrum.
However, there’s still a long way to go. Transgender and non-binary characters remain underrepresented, and stories about LGBTQ+ people of color are often sidelined. Authenticity also matters: who is telling the story? Are queer writers, directors, and actors being given the platform to share their own experiences?
This Pride Month, let’s champion inclusive media by supporting creators who reflect the full spectrum of the LGBTQ+ experience. Representation not only normalizes queerness — it celebrates it.
